eBay dropshipping UK: key takeaways

Updated 24 September 2026

  • eBay UK allows dropshipping from a wholesale supplier. Buying from another retailer or marketplace that ships straight to your buyer is not allowed.
  • eBay requires a business account if you sell items you bought to resell, which is what dropshipping is.
  • Business sellers pay a final value fee of 9.9% to 12.9% in most categories, plus 30p or 40p per order, a 0.35% regulatory fee and 30p per listing without a Shop, all plus VAT.
  • Tell HMRC once gross trading income passes £1,000 in a tax year. VAT registration is compulsory above £90,000 of taxable turnover.
  • eBay reports sellers with 30 or more sales, or about £1,700 or more, in a calendar year to HMRC.
  • Suppliers with UK warehouse stock, such as Saleyee and CJDropshipping, protect your delivery times and your account.
eBay UK policy

Is dropshipping allowed on eBay UK?

Yes, from a wholesale supplier. Here is the rule in eBay's own words, from the eBay.co.uk drop shipping policy.

“Dropshipping, where you fulfil orders directly from a wholesale supplier, is allowed on eBay.”

“Listing an item on eBay and then purchasing the item from another retailer or marketplace that ships directly to your customer is not allowed on eBay.”

eBay UK drop shipping policy. You also stay responsible for delivery within the time in your listing and for the buyer's satisfaction.

In practice that splits suppliers into two groups. Dropshipping and wholesale suppliers such as CJDropshipping, Saleyee, AliExpress (through its dropshipping program and private agents) and Alibaba manufacturers sell to you as a business and ship unbranded parcels, which is what the policy allows. Retailers such as Amazon.co.uk, Argos and Temu are the “other retailer or marketplace” the policy names.

If you break the policy, eBay lists what can happen: “removing the listing or other content, issuing a warning, restricting activity or account suspension.” Retail arbitrage usually comes to light through the buyer, who receives an Amazon or Argos parcel or sees an Amazon Logistics (TBA) tracking number and reports it. Build a UK store on wholesale suppliers with UK stock and you avoid the problem entirely.

Step by step

How do you start dropshipping on eBay UK?

Seven steps from a new account to a store that survives its first 100 orders.

  1. 1

    Open an eBay business account

eBay requires one when you sell items you bought to resell. New accounts start with selling limits, so list fewer, better products first and let the limits grow.

  2. 2

    Register with HMRC

Most UK dropshippers start as a sole trader. A limited company costs more to run but separates your personal finances. Keep every supplier invoice.

  3. 3

Choose a wholesale supplier and place a test order

Pick a supplier that fits eBay policy, ideally with UK stock. Order one item to your own address to check delivery time, packaging and product quality.

  4. 4

    Set honest business policies

Your handling time must match what the supplier can actually do. Accept returns for at least the 14-day cancellation period UK law gives online buyers.

  5. 5

List with strong titles and item specifics

eBay search ranks on relevance, so use the full 80-character title and fill every item specific. Check brands against the VeRO list before you list.

  6. 6

Fulfil fast and upload valid tracking

Order from the supplier as soon as the sale comes in and add a valid tracking number before your dispatch deadline. Late or invalid tracking is how accounts slide to Below Standard.

  7. 7

Watch prices and stock every day

Supplier price rises eat your margin and stock-outs turn into cancelled orders. Reprice or pause listings the same day a supplier changes.

How SuperDS works

From supplier page to eBay.co.uk listing

The same workflow SuperDS sellers use on eBay.com, set up for pounds, UK suppliers and eBay.co.uk.

  1. Import from your supplier

Open a product on CJDropshipping, Saleyee, AliExpress, Alibaba or 20+ other suppliers and add it to SuperDS with the Chrome extension, or bulk import a list of URLs.

  2. Ebay logo

Price it in GBP and list on eBay.co.uk

Your markup rules set the sell price in pounds. Titles, item specifics and images come across from the supplier, and you list to eBay.co.uk in one click or in bulk.

  3. Keep orders and prices under control

eBay.co.uk orders sync into your dashboard, and copy order fills the buyer details at the supplier checkout. Price and stock changes are flagged so you can update listings before they cost you.

Tax, VAT and consumer law

What UK rules apply to eBay dropshippers?

Not tax or legal advice, just the thresholds and rights every new UK seller runs into.

£1,000 trading allowance

The trading allowance covers £1,000 of gross trading income, meaning sales before costs, per tax year. Above that you register with HMRC, usually as a sole trader, and file a Self Assessment return.

£90,000 VAT threshold

VAT registration is compulsory once taxable turnover passes £90,000 in a rolling 12 months. After that you charge 20% VAT and can reclaim VAT on eBay fees.

eBay reports to HMRC

Under the digital platform reporting rules, eBay has collected seller data since 1 January 2024 and made its first reports in January 2025. It reports sellers with 30 or more sales, or about £1,700 or more, in a calendar year.

Goods shipped from overseas

On parcels worth up to £135, online marketplaces such as AliExpress charge UK VAT at checkout. Above £135, import VAT and any duty are collected when the goods arrive. HMRC guidance.

Buyer rights: returns and refunds

Online buyers can cancel within 14 days of delivery and get a refund within 14 days of returning the item. Faulty or misdescribed goods are your responsibility under the Consumer Rights Act, not your supplier's. GOV.UK.

Selling to Northern Ireland and the EU

Listings that reach buyers in Northern Ireland or the EU need GPSR product safety details, including the manufacturer and an EU responsible person. Wholesale suppliers can usually provide them.

Account health

What gets UK dropshipping accounts restricted?

eBay measures you on late dispatch, cancelled orders and cases. These are the usual causes.

Late dispatch and invalid tracking

Your handling time and delivery estimate are promises. A supplier that ships from China in 12 days against a 3-day estimate turns into late delivery defects and cases.

Retailer packaging and tracking

Buyers who receive an Amazon or Argos parcel, or see an Amazon Logistics (TBA) tracking number, often report it to eBay. That is how retail arbitrage usually gets noticed.

Stock-outs and price jumps

Selling an item your supplier no longer has means a cancelled order and a transaction defect. Price monitoring and quick stock updates keep this rare.
