How the eBay UK Fee Calculator Works
Four inputs, one answer. The calculator opens on eBay.co.uk, so every figure is in pounds and uses UK rates.
- 1. Enter the sale. Type the item price and the postage you charge the buyer. eBay takes its cut from both.
- 2. Enter your costs. What you paid for the item and what the postage label costs you. Leave them at zero if you only want the fee.
- 3. Pick category and seller type. The category sets the percentage. Choose Business if you sell as a trader, Private if you are clearing out things you own.
- 4. Add promoted listings. Move the slider to your ad rate. The fee breakdown, net profit and margin update as you type.
eBay UK Fees in 2026: Private vs Business Sellers
The single biggest factor in your eBay UK fee is whether eBay treats you as a private or a business seller.
Private sellers
No final value fee and no regulatory operating fee. The buyer pays a Buyer Protection fee at checkout instead, so the price you set is the money you receive before postage. 300 listings a month are free, then 35p each. Vehicles are charged.
Business sellers
A final value fee of 9.5% to 14.9% by category, 0.35% regulatory operating fee, and 30p or 40p per order, all before VAT. If you buy items to resell, or sell regularly for profit, HMRC and eBay expect you to register as a business.
Dropshipping is always business selling: you list products you do not own yet to make a profit. Keep the calculator on Business and read our guide to eBay dropshipping in the UK for the policy rules that come with it.
eBay UK Final Value Fees by Category
Business-seller final value fee on the total sale (item plus postage), before VAT. Updated September 2026. Add the 0.35% regulatory operating fee and the per-order charge on top. A Shop subscription does not change these rates.
| Category | Final value fee |
|---|---|
| Everything Else | 12.9% |
| Clothes, Shoes & Accessories | 11.9% |
| Home, Furniture & DIY | 11.9% up to £500, then 7.9% |
| Health & Beauty | 10.9% |
| Toys & Games | 10.9% |
| Sporting Goods | 10.9% |
| Collectables | 10.9% |
| Baby | 10.9% |
| Musical Instruments & DJ Equipment | 10.9% |
| Sound & Vision | 9.9% |
| Computers, Tablets & Networking | 9.9% |
| Mobile Phones & Communication | 9.9% |
| Cameras & Photography | 9.9% |
| Video Games & Consoles | 9.9% |
| Books, Comics & Magazines | 9.9% |
| Vehicle Parts & Accessories | 9.5% up to £750, then 3% |
| Jewellery & Watches | 14.9% up to £1,000, then 4% |
| Business, Office & Industrial | 12.5% |
Some sub-categories have their own rates: phones, laptops, TVs and cameras are 6.9% up to £1,000 then 3%, trainers over £100 are 7%, and tyres are 6.9%. Check the eBay listing form for the exact rate on a specific item.
How Much Does eBay Take From a £10, £100 or £1,000 Sale?
Business seller, most categories (12.9%), no promoted listing. The other fees column is the regulatory operating fee plus the per-order charge.
| Sale total | Final value fee | Other fees | eBay keeps | With 20% VAT | You receive |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| £10 | £1.29 | £0.33 | £1.63 | £1.95 | £8.38 |
| £25 | £3.23 | £0.49 | £3.71 | £4.46 | £21.29 |
| £50 | £6.45 | £0.58 | £7.03 | £8.43 | £42.98 |
| £100 | £12.90 | £0.75 | £13.65 | £16.38 | £86.35 |
| £250 | £32.25 | £1.28 | £33.53 | £40.23 | £216.48 |
| £500 | £64.50 | £2.15 | £66.65 | £79.98 | £433.35 |
| £1,000 | £129.00 | £3.90 | £132.90 | £159.48 | £867.10 |
"You receive" is before VAT on fees. If you are VAT registered you reclaim that VAT, so the eBay keeps column is your real cost. If you are not, use the VAT column.
The Buyer Protection Fee: Who Pays It?
Many UK fee calculators get this wrong and take the Buyer Protection fee off the seller's profit.
When you buy from a private seller on eBay.co.uk, eBay adds a Buyer Protection fee to the buyer's total at checkout. It covers eBay's money back guarantee and is how eBay earns on private sales now that private sellers pay no final value fee.
The fee is 10p per item plus 7% of the price up to £20, 4% of the part from £20 to £300 and 2% of the part from £300 to £4,000. On a £50 item that is £2.70. Vehicles, classified ads and property are excluded.
The buyer pays it, not the seller. It never comes out of your payout, so it has no place in a seller fee calculation. Business sellers do not trigger it at all: their buyers are covered by the same guarantee, and the seller pays the final value fee instead.
What it does change is the price the buyer sees. If you sell privately and compete with business listings, remember your item will look slightly more expensive at checkout than the number you typed.
eBay UK Fees Are Charged on Postage Too
The final value fee and the regulatory operating fee apply to the total the buyer pays, not just the item price.
£20 item + £4 postage
£3.58
in fees, before VAT
£24 item, free postage
£3.58
in fees, before VAT
Same total, same fee. Raising postage to lower the item price does not save anything, and buyers filter by total cost anyway. Price for the total you need and pick whichever presentation converts better in your category.
How to Calculate eBay UK Fees: A Dropshipping Example
You list an item at £34.99 with free postage, buy it from your supplier for £16.00 and promote the listing at 3%. Here is where the money goes.
- 1. Final value fee. 12.9% of £34.99 is £4.51.
- 2. Regulatory operating fee. 0.35% of the total is £0.12.
- 3. Per-order charge. The order is over £10, so eBay adds £0.40.
- 4. Promoted listing fee. 3% of the sale is £1.05, charged only when the buyer came through the ad.
- 5. Total eBay fees. £6.09 before VAT, or £7.30 with it. That is 17.4% of the sale before VAT.
- 6. Profit. £34.99 minus the £16.00 supplier cost and £6.09 in fees leaves £12.90, a 36.9% margin before VAT on fees.

How to Lower Your eBay UK Fees
You cannot negotiate the rate, but you control most of what decides the total.
- Pick the right category
- Rates run from 9.5% to 14.9%. Electronics, phones, computers and books sit at 9.9%, while "Everything Else" is 12.9%. List in the category that genuinely fits the item, not the first suggestion.
- Price postage honestly
- The fee is charged on the item and the postage together, so moving cost from the price into postage saves nothing. Free postage priced into the item is simpler for buyers and costs the same in fees.
- Keep promoted listing rates low
- A 5% ad rate on top of 12.9% takes nearly a fifth of the sale. Start at 2% to 3% and only raise it on listings where the extra views turn into orders.
- Stay Above Standard
- Late dispatch and cancelled orders push you toward Below Standard, which costs 6 extra points on every sale. Fast handling time is the cheapest fee cut there is.
- Count VAT before you price
- If you are not VAT registered, the 20% VAT on eBay fees is a real cost. Use the "with VAT" column in the table above when you work out your margin.
What This eBay UK Fee Estimate Does Not Include
The calculator covers the fees charged on every sale. These apply only in some situations, so add them when they affect you.
- International fee
- Business sellers pay an extra 1.05% on sales to buyers in the Eurozone and Northern Europe, 1.8% to the US and Canada, and 2.0% everywhere else.
- Insertion fees
- Without a Shop every business listing costs 30p. A Basic Shop (£27 a month) includes 250 free fixed-price listings, Featured (£77) 1,500 and Anchor (£437) unlimited, which is the main reason business sellers take one.
- Below Standard surcharge
- If your seller level drops to Below Standard, eBay adds 6 percentage points to the final value fee on every sale, rising to 7 after four months in a row.
- VAT on fees
- All business-seller rates on this page are quoted before VAT. eBay adds 20% VAT to your fee invoice. VAT-registered sellers can usually reclaim it.
- Promoted Listings Advanced
- Cost-per-click campaigns are charged per click rather than per sale, so they cannot be shown as a percentage here.
- Postage labels and returns
- Enter your real postage cost in the calculator. Return postage you pay for comes on top.
