Refunds go back to your original payment method. If eBay steps in and rules for you, eBay refunds you and recovers the money from the seller.
Three things void the guarantee, and scammers know all three:
- Paying outside eBay - Bank transfer, cash, money order, Zelle, Venmo to a personal account, gift cards, crypto. eBay's policy states that items where "any part of the payment was completed outside of eBay" are not covered.
- Using a freight forwarder - If you ship to a forwarding service, the seller only needs to prove delivery to the forwarder.
- Giving a wrong address or refusing delivery - Your mistake, your problem.
There is a second layer for high-value categories. eBay Authenticity Guarantee routes eligible sneakers, handbags, watches, jewelry, streetwear, trading cards, and coins through eBay's own authenticators before the item reaches you. eBay scams cluster into a handful of patterns. Once you know the shape, you spot them in seconds.
Scams that target buyers
- Off-platform payment - "eBay fees are high, pay me on Zelle and I'll knock off 10%." The moment you agree, you have no protection. This is the single most common way buyers lose money.
- Too-cheap electronics from a new account - A brand new phone at 40% under market from a seller with 0 to 5 feedback, often with stock photos. Either the item never ships or you get an empty box with a real tracking number.
- Empty box or wrong item with tracking - The seller ships something light to your zip code so tracking says "delivered." You still win the case (photograph the package and weight on delivery), but it wastes weeks.
- Phishing messages - Emails or texts that look like eBay asking you to "confirm your account." Real eBay messages also appear in your eBay Messages inbox. If it is not there, it is fake.
- Fake "eBay Motors" vehicle deals - A car listed far below value, seller says they are deployed overseas, asks for payment through a fake "eBay escrow." eBay only supports Escrow.com for vehicles, and only through checkout.
- Counterfeits - Common in fashion, cosmetics, and phone accessories. Sellers of counterfeit goods also get hit by rights owners through the VeRO program, which is why serious sellers run listings through a VeRO checker before they list.
Scams that target sellers
- False "item not received" - Buyer claims it never arrived. Tracking with delivery confirmation beats this claim under eBay's seller protections.
- False "not as described" - Buyer says the item is broken or fake, returns a different item or a brick. Photos, serial numbers, and video of packing are your evidence.
- Overpayment - Buyer "accidentally" pays extra and asks you to refund the difference to another account. The original payment later reverses.
- Chargeback after delivery - Buyer disputes the charge with their bank instead of using eBay. eBay covers you if tracking shows delivery to the address on the order.
How do you know if an eBay seller is legit?
This is where 90% of buyer safety lives. Spend 60 seconds on the seller before you pay.
- Feedback percentage and count - Above 98% with at least a few hundred ratings is a comfortable seller. 100% with 3 ratings tells you nothing. Click through and read the negatives from the last 6 months; one angry buyer is normal, a pattern of "never arrived" is not.
- Time on eBay - The seller profile shows the join date. Brand new accounts selling high-value electronics are the classic red flag.

- Photos - Real sellers photograph the actual item. Stock images only, or watermarks from another site, mean the seller may not have the product.
- Item location versus shipping time - A listing that says "ships from USA" but quotes 20 to 40 day delivery is shipping from China. Not a scam by itself, but the listing is not being honest.
- Return policy - Sellers who accept returns are betting on their own product. "No returns" is allowed on eBay but shifts the friction to you.
- Messages that push you off eBay - Any request for a phone number, WhatsApp, or outside payment ends the conversation.

Is it safe to buy on eBay with a credit card or debit card?
Yes, and a credit card is the safest option. If you are still asking whether eBay is safe to buy from with a card, the answer is that the card never reaches the seller. eBay checkout accepts credit and debit cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Venmo, and Klarna. Because payment runs through eBay Managed Payments, the seller never sees your card details.
