An eBay account suspended notice means eBay has blocked some or all of your buying and selling activity because of unpaid fees, a policy breach, a performance problem, or an identity check it could not complete. Most suspensions are temporary (7, 10 or 30 days) and can be lifted by fixing the stated problem and appealing through eBay's Seller Help; indefinite suspensions require a formal appeal with evidence and are much harder to reverse. This guide covers how to read the notice, what to write in your appeal, realistic timelines, and what not to do while you wait.
If you are looking for ways to stop this happening in the first place, read the prevention guide at how to avoid eBay account suspension. This post is only about getting a suspended account back.
What is the difference between an eBay account restricted vs suspended?
eBay uses three words that sellers mix up constantly: hold, restriction and suspension. They are not the same thing, and the recovery path is different for each.
| Status | What eBay blocks | Typical trigger | Typical duration | How it ends |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hold | Payouts, sometimes new listings | Unverified bank or identity details, unusual activity, a buyer case waiting on tracking | Hours to a few days | Upload the document or tracking eBay asks for |
| Restriction | Specific actions: listing limits cut, category blocked, Promoted Listings blocked, payouts delayed until tracking scans | Below Standard evaluation, VeRO takedowns, selling above your limits | Until the next monthly evaluation (the 20th) or until you fix the issue | Improve metrics or clear the flagged listings |
| Temporary suspension | Buying, selling, listing, messaging | Unpaid fees, unresolved buyer case, first serious policy breach | 7, 10 or 30 days (eBay states the length in the email) | Pay or fix, then wait out the term |
| Indefinite suspension | Everything, including related accounts | Repeat VeRO strikes, counterfeit items, linked to a previously suspended account, fraud suspicion, dropshipping policy breach at scale | No end date | Successful appeal only |
eBay's help page on account holds, restrictions and suspensions says it plainly: "If your account is restricted or suspended, we'll send an email to your registered email address and to your eBay messages explaining why." That email is your map. Do not act on anything else, especially not on a "suspension" email that only arrived in your personal inbox and not in eBay Messages, because those are usually phishing.
Why is my eBay account suspended? The reasons eBay actually cites
The reasons below cover almost every case an eBay dropshipper will see. Match your email to one of them before you write a word of appeal.
- Unpaid selling costs - You owe final value fees, or eBay refunded a buyer on your behalf and wants the money back. eBay states you "can make a one-time payment to resolve the issue." This is the easiest suspension to lift.
- Seller Performance Standards - On the 20th of every month eBay looks at your defect rate (must stay at or below 2%), cases closed without seller resolution (no more than 2 or 0.3%), and late shipments. Fall Below Standard and you get an extra 6% final value fee the following month, lower search placement and reduced limits. eBay's Seller Standards policy adds that after an extended period Below Standard it "may place selling restrictions on your account and related accounts, or restrict you from registering a new account."
- VeRO repeat notices - One takedown under the Verified Rights Owner program is a warning. Three or four in a short window, especially from the same brand, and you move from "listing removed" to "account suspended." eBay's intellectual property policy lists the escalation as "issuing a warning, restricting activity or account suspension."
- Dropshipping policy breach - eBay's Drop Shipping Policy allows fulfilment from a wholesale supplier but says buying "from another retailer or marketplace that ships directly to your customer is not allowed." Amazon boxes arriving at buyers' doors, retail invoices in the parcel and buyer complaints about "Amazon packaging" are the usual evidence.
- Linked account - Your account shares a bank account, card, address, phone, device or IP with an account eBay already suspended. Even if you did nothing wrong on this account, eBay treats the two as one.
- Identity or business verification failed - eBay could not match your ID, bank statement or business registration to the account details.
- Unresolved buyer issue - An Item Not Received or Not As Described case is open and the deadline for tracking or a refund passed.
- Suspected unauthorised access - Usually cleared with a password reset and a verification code.
How to read the suspension email before you appeal
Open the message in eBay Messages (not your inbox) and pull out four things:
- The reason line - It will name a policy ("Seller Performance," "Verified Rights Owner," "Drop shipping," "Unpaid seller fees") or say "we've noticed a link to another account."
- The duration - "for 7 days," "for 30 days," or "indefinitely." If no duration is stated, treat it as indefinite.
- The action requested - Pay a balance, upload ID, provide tracking, remove listings, or "you may appeal."
- The reference or case number - You will need it on the phone and in chat.
Screenshot the whole message and save the date. Timelines in the table below start from that date.

How to reinstate an eBay account: step-by-step eBay suspension appeal
Skipping step 1 is the most common mistake: eBay will not read an appeal while the original problem is still live.
Step 1: Fix the stated problem first
- Unpaid fees: pay the balance in Seller Hub under Payments. Screenshot the receipt.
- Open cases: refund or upload tracking on every open Item Not Received or Not As Described case, even the ones you think you will win.
- VeRO: end every listing for the brand named in the notice. Then search your whole store for the same brand and end those too.
- Dropshipping policy: end listings that were being fulfilled from retail marketplaces. Line up a wholesale or supplier invoice that shows you buy stock rather than retail orders.
- Identity: get a government photo ID, a bank statement from the last 90 days and (for business accounts) your registration or EIN letter. The name on the ID must match the account exactly.
Step 2: Appeal through Seller Help
Go to Seller Hub, open Seller Help, and look for the "Appeal" or "Resolve" button attached to the restriction. Where eBay provides a specific link in the suspension message, use that link; appeals sent through general contact forms often get routed to the wrong queue.
Step 3: Call or chat if there is no appeal button
Use Help & Contact, request a call back or chat, choose "Selling," then "Account restrictions," and have your user ID, registered email and case reference ready. Ask the agent to note that you have completed the requested actions and to escalate to Trust and Safety. Agents can escalate; they usually cannot lift a suspension themselves.
Step 4: Send a written appeal with evidence
Submit one structured appeal. Do not send five.
What to write in an eBay suspension appeal (template)
Keep it under 300 words.
Subject: Appeal for account [your user ID], reference [case number]
Hello eBay Trust and Safety team,
My account was suspended on [date] for [reason exactly as stated in the notice]. I understand why this happened: [one honest sentence, for example "three listings used a brand name that I did not have permission to sell"].
What I have already done: [bullet list: ended the 14 affected listings on 3 September, paid the outstanding balance of $86.40, uploaded tracking on the two open cases, attached my supplier invoice from XYZ Wholesale].
What I have changed to prevent it happening again: [bullet list: every new listing is checked against a VeRO brand list before it goes live, I now buy from a wholesale supplier with commercial invoices, handling time increased from 1 to 3 business days to protect my late shipment rate, orders are tracked daily].
I am asking you to reinstate selling privileges on this account. I am happy to provide any further documents.
Thank you,
[Full name matching the account]
Attach the evidence you mention. Reviewers respond to proof, not promises.
How long does eBay suspension reinstatement take?
| Situation | What usually happens | Realistic timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Unpaid fees | Account reopens automatically after payment clears | Same day to 48 hours |
| Identity verification hold | Documents reviewed, account reopened | 24 to 72 hours after upload |
| 7-day suspension | Ends automatically, no appeal needed unless you want it lifted early | 7 days |
| 30-day suspension | Ends automatically; appeals are rarely shortened | 30 days |
| Below Standard restriction | Re-evaluated on the 20th; limits lift once metrics recover | 1 to 3 monthly cycles |
| Indefinite suspension, first appeal | Written review by Trust and Safety | 2 to 4 weeks for a decision |
| Indefinite suspension, denied appeal | eBay generally will not review again for a long period | 6 to 12 months before a realistic second attempt |
These are ranges reported by sellers who had an eBay account suspended, not official eBay commitments. As of September 2026, eBay publishes no service-level promise for appeals, so check your Seller Help case for status instead of emailing repeatedly.
What happens to your listings, orders and money while suspended
- Active listings - Ended or hidden, and they do not always come back after reinstatement. Keep a backup.
- Open orders - Still your responsibility. Unshipped orders become Item Not Received cases that sink your appeal.
- Payouts - Usually held until open cases close.
- Related accounts - Any account sharing your details may be restricted at the same time.
What NOT to do after an eBay account suspension
Every one of these makes getting an eBay account suspended notice reversed harder or impossible.
- Do not open a new account - This is the single worst move. eBay matches new registrations against bank accounts, cards, addresses, phone numbers, devices, cookies and IP addresses. A new account linked to a suspended one is usually suspended within days, and the original appeal gets flagged as "attempted to evade suspension." So-called "stealth accounts" bought online carry the same risk plus the risk of losing your money to whoever sold you the account.
- Do not use a friend's or family member's account - It gets linked by address and device, and now two accounts are suspended.
- Do not spam appeals - Multiple open cases about the same suspension get merged or closed. One clear appeal, then wait.
- Do not argue policy - "The dropshipping rule is unfair" has never reinstated an account. "I understand the rule and here is what I changed" has.
- Do not lie about fulfilment - eBay can see tracking numbers that originate from Amazon and Walmart. If you were retail dropshipping, say what you changed rather than denying it.
- Do not go silent on buyers - Answer messages and ship what is already sold.
- Do not pay "reinstatement services" up front - No agency has a back door to eBay. Never share your login.

How to list safely after reinstatement
The reinstatement email is not the finish line. A second strike for the same reason is very often indefinite. Here is what experienced eBay dropshippers change in the first 30 days back.
- Relist gradually - Start with 10 to 20% of your old catalogue, prioritise items with proven sales, and add more each week. A reinstated account that lists 800 items on day one looks like a bot to eBay's systems. If your suspension involved API-connected software, consider listing through a tool that does not require API access, such as the SuperDS non-API lister, which works through the extension like a normal seller session rather than through a third-party app token.
- Check every brand before it goes live - If VeRO played any part in your suspension, run each new title through the free VeRO checker and keep VeRO protection on so flagged brands are blocked at import instead of after a takedown.
- Fix fulfilment, not just listings - Most dropshipping suspensions are really late-shipment or Item Not Received suspensions in disguise. Sync orders daily so tracking is uploaded within handling time; the orders sync guide walks through how SuperDS pulls eBay orders, places supplier orders and pushes tracking back automatically.
- Set handling time you can actually meet - If your supplier ships in 2 days, set 3. eBay's Top Rated bar is a late shipment rate of no more than 3%, and a reinstated account has no cushion.
- Keep supplier invoices - They are the first thing a reviewer asks for in a dropshipping policy case.
- Watch the 20th - Check your Seller Dashboard a few days before each monthly evaluation.
Reinstatement checklist
- Open the notice in eBay Messages and note the reason, duration, action requested and reference number.
- Fix the stated problem completely: pay, refund, upload tracking, end listings or upload ID.
- Ship every open order and answer every buyer message during the suspension.
- Submit one structured appeal (problem, what you fixed, what you changed) with evidence attached, through the link in the notice or Seller Help.
- If there is no appeal button, request a call back or chat, ask for escalation to Trust and Safety, and record the case number.
- Wait the realistic timeline for your case type before following up once, politely, on the same case.
- Do not open, buy or borrow another account while any suspension is active.
- After reinstatement, relist gradually, check brands before listing, and automate order tracking so a second strike never happens.
Getting an eBay account suspended is survivable if you treat the notice as a to-do list rather than an argument. Fix, prove, wait, then run the account more carefully than before.
