How to Write an eBay Title That Ranks in 2026 (Examples)

An eBay title is the 80-character line that eBay's Cassini search engine matches against buyer queries, so it decides whether your listing shows up at all. The best eBay titles put the brand, product type, model and key specs first, use every character on words a buyer would actually type, and leave out filler, punctuation and anything that is not literally true about the item. Item specifics handle the filters; the title handles the search match and the click.

I have rewritten thousands of titles for dropshipped listings, and the same pattern holds every time: the listing with the boring, keyword-dense title outsells the one with "AMAZING!!!" in it. This guide covers what Cassini indexes, a keyword order formula, a table of before-and-after examples across categories, the words that get you demoted, and how to write titles at scale without breaking eBay's Search Manipulation Policy.

What does eBay's Cassini search actually index in a title?

Cassini reads the full 80 characters and matches them against the buyer's query, then ranks matching listings by relevance and performance signals (sales, click-through rate, price, seller standards). Three things about that matter for how you write:

  • Every word is a keyword - there is no hidden keyword field on eBay. If a buyer types "cordless stick vacuum pet hair" and your title says "Vacuum Cleaner Home", you do not match on "cordless", "stick" or "pet hair". You are invisible for that search.
  • Word order affects display, not matching - Cassini matches words in any order, but buyers read left to right and mobile search results truncate after roughly 50 to 55 characters depending on device. The first half of your title is what most buyers see before they tap.
  • Subtitles and descriptions are not the same as titles - eBay's Best Match ranks primarily on title and item specifics. Subtitles (a paid upgrade, $1.50 on most listings, more for higher-priced or longer listings) show in search results but are not the main search field. Descriptions are searched only if the buyer ticks "include description" which almost nobody does.

Our Cassini ranking guide covers the performance side. This post is about the words.

What is the keyword order formula for eBay titles?

Use this order and fill left to right until you hit 80 characters:

Brand + Product type + Model or line + Key specs + Size or quantity + Color + Condition or compatibility

Applied to a real product:

Dyson V8 Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner Animal Pet Hair Bagless HEPA Purple New

That is 78 characters, starts with what the buyer types first, and includes the terms a buyer filters on (cordless, stick, pet hair, HEPA). The words eBay's item specifics already capture (brand, model, color) are repeated in the title on purpose, because the title drives the text match and item specifics drive the filter match. You want both.

A few rules that make the formula work:

  • Use the buyer's language, not the supplier's - suppliers write "Household Multifunctional Electric Vegetable Cutter". Buyers search "vegetable chopper" or "mandoline slicer". Check eBay's search bar suggestions and the sold listings for your product to see which wins.
  • Include a use case if there is room - "for Kitchen", "for Car", "for Kids" catches long-tail searches and doubles as a compatibility signal.
  • Numbers count as keywords - "2 Pack", "12 inch", "1000W", "128GB" are heavily searched. Write them as the buyer would type, with a space before the unit only if that is the common form.
  • Singular beats plural, usually - Cassini handles most plurals, but the singular is what eBay's own suggestions show. Do not waste characters listing both.
  • Stop at 80, but use all 80 - eBay's own seller guidance and independent studies both find titles using most of the limit outsell short ones. A 40-character title is throwing away half your search reach.

eBay title examples: before and after across categories

Each "before" is a title style I see in real dropshipped listings every week. The character count is shown so you can see how much room a clean title reclaims.

Notice the fitness example. The "before" used 77 characters but wasted them on "Great for" and a list of every activity under the sun. The "after" is the same length and says what the product is (5 loop bands, latex) and what buyers search for (legs, glutes, home gym).

What should you leave out of an eBay title?

Every character you spend on these is a character not spent on a keyword, and several of them trigger eBay's Search Manipulation Policy.

  • ALL CAPS - eBay's listing quality guidance flags excessive capitalization, buyers read it as spam, and it does nothing for matching. Use Title Case.
  • Filler and hype - "L@@K", "WOW", "Amazing", "Best Quality", "Hot Sale", "Must Have", "Free Shipping" (shipping is shown separately anyway). Nobody searches for these.
  • Punctuation and symbols - asterisks, exclamation marks, quotation marks and emojis. eBay's policy specifically bans question marks used to imply uncertainty ("Genuine?"). Hyphens and slashes are fine if the product name uses them.
  • Keyword stuffing - listing ten unrelated product names or every synonym you can think of. eBay's Search Manipulation Policy says keywords must be "directly related to the item for sale", and violations can mean listing removal, warnings, restrictions or suspension.
  • Brands you do not sell - "Nike style", "like Apple", "compatible with Yeti" on a generic tumbler. The policy bans "fits", "for" and "compatible with" before brand names on clothing, jewelry, accessories and universally compatible items, and it is the fastest way to a VeRO notice. Since early 2026 eBay has also been flagging titles that contain more than one brand name even when both are accurate, so keep it to one.
  • Condition words that contradict item specifics - "New" in the title with "Used" in item specifics is a mismatch that hurts ranking and invites Item Not As Described cases.
  • Your store name - unless buyers search for it, it is dead weight.
  • Words banned by eBay - anything implying a replica, counterfeit, or "unauthorized" item, and prohibited or restricted item terms. eBay's Prohibited and Restricted Items policy covers these.

Do subtitles, item specifics or titles matter more?

They do different jobs, and the mistake is treating them as interchangeable.

FieldSearched by Cassini?Shown in results?CostBest use
Title (80 chars)Yes, primaryYes, truncated on mobile at about 50 to 55 charsFreeBrand, product, model, specs, size, color
Item specificsYes, drives filters and Best MatchPartially (some shown as chips)FreeEvery required and recommended specific filled accurately
Subtitle (55 chars)Not the main search fieldYes, below title on desktop$1.50 and up per listingBundle contents, warranty, a benefit that earns the click

For dropshippers listing at volume, the subtitle is rarely worth the fee. A $1.50 subtitle on a $25 item with a $7 margin is 21% of your profit before the item has sold. Spend the effort on item specifics instead, which are free and feed the filters buyers use. Our item specifics guide explains which ones move ranking.

What goes wrong with bad eBay titles?

Bad titles fail in three ways, and each has a named consequence.

Search demotion. Cassini treats a mismatch between title, item specifics and buyer behavior as a relevance problem. A stuffed title gets impressions for searches it cannot convert, click-through rate drops, and eBay's Best Match pushes the listing down. Sellers see this as "my listings stopped getting views" a few weeks after they "optimized" them.

VeRO takedowns. The Verified Rights Owner program lets brands report listings that use their trademarks. Putting "Stanley" in the title of a generic tumbler because it gets searches is a trademark issue, not an SEO trick. Repeated VeRO notices lead to selling restrictions and can end an account. Check our VeRO brand list before you use any brand name you did not source from that brand.

Item Not As Described. If your title promises "Stainless Steel" and the supplier ships coated aluminum, the buyer opens an INAD case under the eBay Money Back Guarantee. You pay return shipping, refund the sale, and the case counts against your Seller Performance Standards. Enough of them and you drop below standard, which raises your final value fee and cuts your search visibility. Titles must describe the item you will actually ship, which for dropshippers means reading the supplier listing carefully, not copying its marketing.

How do you write eBay titles safely at scale?

Writing one great title takes five minutes. Writing two hundred takes a system.

Start from what sells. Search your product on eBay, filter to Sold Items, and read the titles of the top ten. Note the words that repeat. Those are the terms buyers converted on, and they are your keyword list.

Build with a tool, then edit. The free SuperDS title builder takes your product keywords and assembles an 80-character title in the brand, product, specs, size, color order, with a live character count so you never get cut off. Paste in the supplier's title, strip the junk, add the buyer's terms, done.

Check brand names before you list. If a supplier title contains a brand you did not source from that brand, remove it. SuperDS runs a VeRO check on brand names at listing time so a risky word gets flagged before it goes live rather than after the takedown.

Use item specifics for what titles cannot hold. Fill every required and recommended specific. Material, features, room, power source, connectivity. This is where the long tail lives, and it is free.

Review the mobile view. Open your listing on your phone and look at the search result card. If the important words are cut off, move them left.

Rewrite the underperformers. Once a month, sort active listings by impressions and click-through rate. Titles with high impressions and low clicks are matching the wrong searches. Titles with low impressions are missing keywords. Rewrite both. For bulk edits, the SuperDS title builder feature generates and applies optimized titles across your imported products in one pass, so a catalog refresh takes an afternoon instead of a week.

eBay title checklist

  • Brand (only if genuinely that brand), then product type, model, key specs, size or quantity, color.
  • Use 70 to 80 characters. Under 60 is leaving searches on the table.
  • Every word is something a buyer would type. No hype, no symbols, no ALL CAPS.
  • Most important keywords in the first 50 characters for mobile.
  • No brand names you do not sell, no "style", "like" or "compatible with" on generic goods, and one brand maximum.
  • Title matches item specifics and matches what the supplier actually ships.
  • Skip the paid subtitle unless the margin comfortably covers $1.50 or more.
  • Fill all recommended item specifics to catch what the title cannot.
  • Check the mobile search card before you move on.
  • Rewrite titles with high impressions and low clicks every month.

Get the title right and everything downstream (impressions, clicks, conversion, fewer disputes) gets easier. Get it wrong and no amount of promoted listing budget fixes it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many characters can an eBay title have?
eBay titles are limited to 80 characters, and spaces, punctuation and symbols all count. Subtitles get a separate 55 characters but are a paid upgrade and are not the main field Cassini searches. Aim to use 70 to 80 characters on real keywords.
Should eBay titles be in all caps?
No. All caps titles do not match searches any better, eBay's listing quality guidance flags excessive capitalization, and buyers read shouting as spam. Use Title Case, which is easier to scan on a phone and looks like the listings from established sellers.
Does keyword order matter in an eBay title?
Cassini matches words in any order, so order does not change whether you appear. It does change what buyers see, because mobile search results cut titles off after about 50 to 55 characters. Put brand, product type and the strongest specs first so the visible part sells the click.
Can I use a brand name in my eBay title if the item is compatible?
Only with care. eBay's Search Manipulation Policy bans 'fits', 'for' and 'compatible with' before brand names on clothing, jewelry, accessories and universally compatible items, and using a brand you did not source from that brand risks a VeRO takedown. For genuine accessories, one accurate compatibility phrase is allowed.
Are eBay subtitles worth the fee?
Rarely for dropshippers. A subtitle costs $1.50 or more per listing whether it sells or not, and it is not the main search field. On a $25 item with a $7 margin that is a fifth of your profit. Spend the effort on item specifics, which are free and drive eBay's filters.
