Branded Dropshipping in 2026: Suppliers, Costs and Risks

Branded dropshipping is regular dropshipping with your own name on it: the supplier still stores and ships the product, but it arrives in packaging with your logo, a thank-you card and sometimes a printed label or tag, so the buyer sees your brand instead of a plain poly mailer. You do not manufacture anything or hold stock. You pay a supplier like CJ Dropshipping, a print-on-demand service or an AliExpress seller a little extra per order to make a generic product look like it came from a real company.

What is branded dropshipping and how is it different from private label?

Sellers use "branded," "white label" and "private label" interchangeably and then buy the wrong thing. They sit on a spectrum from zero commitment to full ownership.

Branded dropshipping is the cheapest step up from generic. You keep the no-inventory model and add a brand layer at the packaging level. Private label is a different business with a purchase order and a warehouse. If you are weighing that jump, private label dropshipping covers the full version.

Not every supplier that says "custom branding" means the same thing. Here is what the main options offer as of September 2026, checked against each company's own pages.

  • CJ Dropshipping - the most complete option for general goods. Under My CJ > Custom Packaging you pick pre-designed boxes, mailers, thank-you cards and stickers, or upload your own design and CJ quotes a price and MOQ. Their stated minimum for most custom packaging is 1 unit, though cards, tags and stickers need a small print run. CJ also runs a print-on-demand line where your logo goes on the product itself. Full sourcing notes in the CJ Dropshipping supplier guide.
  • AliExpress sellers - many jewelry, apparel and accessory stores offer "custom logo" as a variant, usually laser engraving or a printed hang tag, for $0.50 to $3 extra per unit with a 10 to 50 piece minimum. Message the seller and ask for a photo of previous logo work before ordering. Packaging is almost always still their poly mailer.
  • Alibaba manufacturers - real private label territory. Typical MOQs run 100 to 1,000 units for the product, and custom printed packaging from Chinese packaging suppliers often starts at 500 to 2,000 units. Samples cost $20 to $100 plus express shipping. Some factories will dropship single orders from a stock you prepay, which is the hybrid most branded sellers end up with. See the Alibaba supplier guide before you commit a deposit.
  • Printful - print-on-demand with inside labels at $0.99 per label, custom pack-ins you ship to their warehouse (with a $25 monthly minimum storage fee if you only store branding items), and branded packing slips. Printful states its packaging carries no Printful branding.
  • Printify - similar, with custom neck labels from $0.55 and printed packaging inserts from $0.15 ($0.10 on the Premium plan), printed per order so no bulk purchase.

If you sell on eBay, note that none of these change the product's competitiveness in search. eBay buyers filter by price and delivery date, not brand story, which matters for the strategy section below.

How much does branded dropshipping cost to start?

Most guides skip the numbers. Here is a realistic first-90-day budget for one product line.

ItemLow endTypicalNotes
Logo design$0 (Canva)$50 to $300 (Fiverr or 99designs)Get vector files (SVG or AI), suppliers need them
Trademark search$0$200 to $500 with an attorneyUSPTO search is free, a clearance opinion is not
USPTO trademark application$350 per class$350 to $1,100$350 base fee per class since January 2025
Sample orders (3 to 5 units)$30$80 to $200Includes express shipping from China
Custom packaging$0.30 to $1.50 per order (CJ per-unit)$200 to $600 (Alibaba MOQ 500)Plus storage if the supplier holds it
Thank-you cards or stickers$15 to $40 per 100$40 to $120 per 500Cheapest brand signal you can buy
Product photos with branding$0 (supplier photos)$100 to $400Branded mockups outperform stock images on Shopify
Store and tools$0 on eBay$29 to $79 per month on ShopifyPlus apps
Total before first saleAbout $400$1,000 to $3,000Excluding ad spend

Compare that with generic eBay dropshipping, where you can list 100 products for $0 and find out what sells before spending a cent on branding.

A worked example

You find a $9 pet grooming glove on CJ. Custom mailer plus a thank-you card adds $0.90 per order. You sell it on Shopify at $24.99 with $4.99 shipping. Shopify Payments takes 2.9 percent plus $0.30 ($1.17). CJ's shipping to the US is around $4.50. Net per order: $29.98 minus $9 minus $0.90 minus $4.50 minus $1.17 equals $14.41. Healthy, but you paid for the traffic. On eBay the same glove sells for $16.99 free shipping, eBay takes 13.6 percent plus $0.40 ($2.71), and without branding costs you net $16.99 minus $9 minus $4.50 minus $2.71 equals $0.78. Adding a $0.90 branded mailer on eBay puts you underwater. Same product, and branding only pays where the buyer pays for it.

Where does branded dropshipping work, and where does it not?

Shopify, TikTok Shop and Etsy: yes

On your own store the brand is the product page. Custom packaging drives repeat purchases, unboxing content and reviews that mention "the packaging was so cute." TikTok Shop and Etsy buyers pay a premium for anything that looks made-by-a-person rather than bought-off-a-pallet.

eBay: brand matters less than price and speed

eBay's search ranks on price, shipping cost, delivery estimate, seller metrics and listing quality. A branded mailer moves none of those. What a trademark does give you on eBay is protection. Once you hold a registered trademark from the USPTO (or the equivalent in your country), you can enrol in eBay's Verified Rights Owner (VeRO) program as a rights owner. eBay's Intellectual Property Policy lets enrolled owners file a Notice of Claimed Infringement, and eBay typically removes the reported listing within about a day. That means if a competitor copies your branded listing, photos and name, you have a tool to take them down rather than just reporting and hoping.

So on eBay the branded play is defensive: brand the winners you already sell so nobody can clone them, rather than brand everything hoping it converts.

What goes wrong with branded dropshipping?

Trademark conflicts and VeRO from the other side

The most expensive mistake is picking a brand name someone already owns. Sellers brand generic AliExpress goods with a catchy word, sell for six months, then get a VeRO takedown on eBay or a cease-and-desist on Shopify because the name is a registered mark in that product class. eBay's VeRO program removes the listings first and asks questions later, and repeated intellectual property strikes can end the account. Run a free search on the USPTO trademark search tool and a Google search on the name plus your product category before you print a single box.

The reverse problem is just as common. Adding a real brand's name or design to a generic product (a "Stanley-style" tumbler, an "inspired by" logo) is counterfeiting, not branding, and it triggers the same VeRO process against you.

MOQ cash tie-up

500 custom mailers at $0.80 each is $400 sitting in a supplier's warehouse. If the product stops selling in month two, that money and the boxes are gone. Order the smallest run any supplier allows, and only for products with 30 days of proven sales.

The supplier ships unbranded anyway

This happens constantly on AliExpress and with newer CJ warehouses. Your custom packaging is at one warehouse, the order routes from another, and the buyer gets a plain bag. Order a sample to yourself from the same listing and shipping method your customers use, and check every few weeks. On Shopify a missing brand box is disappointing; on Etsy it can trigger a "not handmade" report under Etsy's Seller Policy.

Handling returns for a "brand" that does not exist

Branded packaging raises buyer expectations. When the product inside is the same $9 glove sold everywhere, refund and return rates rise. Keep a returns process that does not route through China, and price the product so that a 5 to 8 percent return rate still leaves margin.

Seller testing product demand on a marketplace before adding branding

How to start branded dropshipping safely: test first, brand second

The sellers who lose money on branding brand first and test second. Flip it.

  • Test demand unbranded on eBay - list 20 to 50 candidate products with zero branding spend. eBay brings the buyers, so you find out in two to three weeks which ones move. SuperDS's Products Finder shows what is already selling with sold counts and estimated margins, and the 1-Click Lister pushes a CJ, AliExpress or Alibaba product to eBay in seconds, so testing 50 products is an afternoon, not a week.
  • Pick the two or three winners - products with repeat sales, low return rates and a margin above 20 percent on eBay. Those margins survive branding costs.
  • Clear the name - USPTO search, domain check, social handle check. File the trademark application ($350 per class) once the product line proves out.
  • Order samples of the branded version - to your own address, through the exact supplier flow customers get. Photograph the unboxing for your Shopify listing.
  • Launch the branded version on Shopify, TikTok Shop or Etsy - where the packaging earns its premium. Keep the unbranded eBay listing running for volume and cash flow.
  • Enrol in VeRO once the registration issues - and use it against copycats of your branded listings on eBay.
  • Recheck the supplier monthly - sample order, packaging check, price check. Suppliers change warehouses without telling you.

Branded dropshipping checklist

  • Know which model you are buying: branded (packaging only), white label (stock product, your logo) or private label (your spec, your inventory).
  • Confirm in writing what the supplier will actually put your logo on, and the MOQ for each piece.
  • Search the trademark database before printing anything, and never borrow another brand's name or look.
  • Budget $400 to $3,000 for the first branded line, and do not spend it until eBay sales prove the product.
  • Brand for Shopify, TikTok and Etsy margins; keep eBay unbranded except as a defensive move for winners.
  • Sample your own order every month.
  • Use SuperDS to run the unbranded test store on eBay so the research and listing work does not eat the hours you need for the brand.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is branded dropshipping?
Branded dropshipping is standard dropshipping where the supplier ships each order in packaging carrying your brand: a custom mailer or box, a thank-you card, stickers, and sometimes a printed tag or engraved logo on the product. You still hold no inventory. Suppliers such as CJ Dropshipping, Printful and Printify offer it per order.
What is the difference between branded dropshipping and private label?
Branded dropshipping adds your logo to packaging on a supplier-fulfilled generic product with no stock. Private label means a manufacturer produces a product to your specification, you buy a minimum order quantity, and you or a warehouse hold the inventory. Private label costs $2,000 or more upfront; branded dropshipping can start under $500.
Which suppliers offer branded dropshipping?
CJ Dropshipping offers custom packaging with a stated 1 unit minimum on most items. Printful and Printify add inside labels, neck labels and packaging inserts to print-on-demand orders. Many AliExpress sellers offer logo engraving or tags for small minimums, and Alibaba manufacturers handle full private label with MOQs of 100 to 1,000 units.
How much does branded dropshipping cost to start?
Roughly $400 at the low end and $1,000 to $3,000 typically. That covers a logo, samples, a small packaging run, thank-you cards, product photos and a USPTO trademark application at $350 per class. Ad spend and a Shopify plan come on top.
Does branded dropshipping work on eBay?
Not as a sales driver. eBay search ranks on price, delivery time and seller metrics, so packaging rarely lifts conversions. A registered trademark does let you enrol in eBay's VeRO program and remove copycat listings, which makes branding a defensive move for proven winners rather than a default.
